Common Fall Indoor Air Quality Problems & How to Fix Them

Changes in indoor air quality are to be expected as the seasons change. In today’s post, the plumbers and HVAC technicians at McLay Services share a look at common indoor air quality problems that occur in the fall season and what you can do to address them.

High humidity levels. The summer season is characterized by high outdoor humidity levels. As temperatures become cooler in the fall, humidity levels take a long time to catch up, sometimes reaching nearly 100% in the first few weeks of the season. The ideal relative indoor humidity level is around 50%. At higher levels, your indoor spaces will feel sticky, bedsheets will feel damp, and for some people breathing can become difficult.

Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to help keep relative indoor humidity at ideal levels. Turning on exhaust fans when bathing or cooking is one way. Running the air conditioner—which removes moisture from the air as part of its function—is another. For extremely humid indoor spaces, consider installing a whole-home dehumidifier. Most HVAC and tankless water heater  contractors should be able to help you choose the type that will work best with your existing HVAC system.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are chemicals that can be found in common household items, such as plastics, paint and aerosol sprays. Some of these compounds are off-gassed over several years, and certain compounds’ off-gassing can be accelerated by typical fall conditions. You can get rid of VOCs by allowing fresh air into every room in your home. You can do this simply by opening the windows at least 15 minutes a day. You can also upgrade to a higher-efficiency HVAC air filter or, for large indoor spaces, install a whole-home air purifier.

Poor air circulation. Poor air circulation is characterized by “stuffy” rooms and smells that don’t go away easily. This is because the air tends to stay in one place instead of getting replenished with fresh air. Fall is the peak season for dust mites, so it is a good idea to address any air circulation issues your home may have. We’ve described how regularly opening your windows can help flush out stale air in your home. You should also make sure your HVAC system is properly-maintained. This helps ensure proper air circulation throughout your home.
