HVAC Maintenance Checklist for the New Year

Maintenance Checklist

If you’re thinking about other important things to add to your list of resolutions for 2022, consider including your HVAC system! Here McLay Services, Inc., your trusted source for the latest HVAC technology trends and news, shares a checklist to help you ensure the performance and efficiency of your heating and cooling system throughout the year.

Monthly Tasks

Keep the area around the outdoor unit clean. Get rid of any debris and excess foliage that may obstruct airflow. Allow at least three feet of space between the unit and other outdoor items like furniture and potted plants. Don’t forget to inspect them for issues that may require the expertise of a certified HVAC technician. Watch out for dirty coils, damaged fins and leaking water. Listen for any strange noises coming from the system as well.

Quarterly Tasks

Every time temperatures change, you must adjust the thermostat to prevent your HVAC system from overloading and wasting energy. Set the thermostat to “cool” when the weather gets warm; set it to “warm” or “heat” when temperatures start dropping. Also, make it a habit to replace dirty air filters at least once every three months. You may, however, have to do so more frequently if you have pets or family members with respiratory issues. Lastly, call a heating and AC repair technician to check for any disconnected or loose electrical connections within your HVAC unit.

Seasonal Tasks

Schedule your HVAC maintenance appointment before every seasonal change to ensure your home comfort equipment’s performance and efficiency. Make sure to have your air conditioner inspected and serviced before summer arrives. Late summer or early fall is the best time for a furnace tune-up and maintenance.
